Most travelers who pass through Dehradun on the way to Char Dham never hear of Chakrata — which is precisely what makes it so special. This cantonment hill town at 2,118 metres, 88 km from Dehradun in the Yamuna Valley, has been a restricted military area for decades, limiting tourist development and preserving its forests, villages, and tribal culture in near-pristine condition.
Where is Chakrata?
Chakrata is in Dehradun district, accessible via the Yamuna Valley road from Vikasnagar (55 km from Dehradun). The restricted zone has been gradually opened to tourism, though visitors still need to register at the entry checkpost.
Tiger Falls — Highest Waterfall in Uttarakhand
The most spectacular attraction near Chakrata is Tiger Falls — a single-plunge waterfall dropping approximately 312 metres in a narrow stream, making it the highest waterfall in Uttarakhand and one of the tallest in India. The walk from the road to the base of the falls is 1.5 km through forest. The falls are at their most dramatic during and immediately after monsoon (August-September).
Chilmiri Neck Viewpoint
The Chilmiri Neck ridge above Chakrata town offers a panoramic view of the Tons River valley and on clear days — the Himalayan main range including Bandarpunch and the peaks visible from the Yamunotri direction. The viewpoint is a 30-minute walk from the main town.
Jaunsari Tribe and Local Culture
The villages surrounding Chakrata are home to the Jaunsari tribal community — one of Uttarakhand’s most culturally distinctive groups, believed to be descendants of the Pandavas. Their festivals (including the unusual Mahasu Devta festivals), distinctive wooden architecture, and traditional wool weaving make the villages around Chakrata extraordinarily interesting for cultural tourism.
How to Combine with Char Dham
Chakrata works beautifully as a pre-yatra stopover for those driving from Delhi to Yamunotri. Route: Delhi → Dehradun → Chakrata (night halt) → Vikasnagar → Barkot → Janki Chatti (Yamunotri). This adds 1 day but substitutes a monotonous highway drive with a spectacular forest hill station experience.
